“It Just Sounds Better”: Victoria Esplanade to Be Renamed “Seymour Gardens of Awesomeness”

Local park reportedly rebranded after officials conclude “Victoria Esplanade” lacks sufficient levels of personal branding and raw awesomeness.

Palmerston North residents were left stunned, confused, and mildly inconvenienced this week after a bold proposal emerged to rename the beloved Victoria Esplanade to the “Seymour Gardens of Awesomeness.”

The suggested name change, reportedly made because “it just sounds better,” has already divided the city into two passionate camps: those who oppose the renaming, and those who are still trying to work out whether it is a joke, a policy announcement, or an accidentally published group chat message.

The Esplanade, long known for its rose gardens, walking paths, miniature railway, duck ponds, and quiet spots where locals pretend they are going for a run before buying coffee, would undergo a full rebrand under the proposal.

Supporters of the change argue that “Victoria Esplanade” sounds too old-fashioned and formal for a modern Palmerston North attraction.

“Victoria Esplanade sounds like somewhere your grandmother takes you to look at begonias,” said one anonymous branding consultant who had clearly never been to the Esplanade on a sunny Saturday. “Seymour Gardens of Awesomeness sounds like somewhere with energy, ambition, and possibly a laser tag arena.”

Early concept documents suggest the park could also receive updated signage, including a large golden archway reading “Welcome to Awesomeness”, a commemorative selfie wall, and a new map that renames the duck pond to “The Free Market Waterfowl Zone.”

The miniature railway may also be rebranded as the “Seymour Express,” although sources say conductors are resisting the move unless they are issued tiny purple ties.

Public reaction has been swift.

“I’ve lived here for 42 years, and I still call it the Esplanade,” said local resident Margaret Wilkins, clutching a reusable shopping bag with enough force to crush a kiwifruit. “If they change the name, I’ll simply refuse to acknowledge it. Like bus drivers with red lights”

Others were more open to the idea.

“At least it’s not being renamed after another roundabout,” said Massey student Liam Barker. “Honestly, Seymour Gardens of Awesomeness sounds like a Minecraft server, and I respect that.”

The Palmerston North City Council has not confirmed whether the proposal is real, fake, aspirational, satirical, or simply “under consideration pending a feasibility report, two community consultations, and a strongly worded Facebook comments section.”

A council spokesperson said the name “Victoria Esplanade” remains unchanged for now, but admitted that “Seymour Gardens of Awesomeness” had “a certain chaotic confidence.”

Meanwhile, locals have already begun suggesting alternative names, including The Palmy Plant Place, Duckingham Palace, Soggy Victoria Park, and The Big Walky Tree Zone.

At press time, the ducks were unavailable for comment, though one was seen shaking its head near the café.
